Hacked…(off)…

Posted in News, Personal  by Mike

In the early hours of this morning my site was hacked. A small malicious file was placed in every single folder that directed people away from my site and onto a virus site.

Thanks.

It’s taken pretty much all day to identify what happened and try to deal with it. At the moment, all links are broken, although the main page is back up.

I’ll fix it as soon as I can! I may update my blog software while I’m at it and that might break the whole thing…stay tuned!

A very hacked off Mike.

Mini…Mini….MINI!!!

Posted in News, Personal  by Mike

Out and about on Sunday at the Kennedy School soaking pool with my son, Henry, we spotted his favorite car in the parking lot…a Mini. NO…not that rubbish that BMW pretend is a Mini…but a REAL one!! It still had UK plates underneath the Oregon ones, and it was right hand drive to boot! Here’s Henry exploring…

On my playlist

Posted in Music, News, Personal, iTunes  by Mike

No photography today - busy retouching my last wedding and Cherry’s calendar. Here are some of the songs currently rocking my playlist:Bon Jovi “Dirty Little Secret” - on hellova sexy song (no iTunes link)

Mötley Crüe “Saint’s Of Los Angeles” - anticipation for the new album is at boiling point…Mötley Crüe - Saints of Los Angeles - Single

Elvis Presley “Viva Las Vegas” - I miss Vegas…must get back there soon…Elvis Presley - Elvis Viva Las Vegas

And - bizarrely - Def Leppard’s latest…”Songs From The Sparkle Lounge”. My buddy Steve told me to get it, crank it, and rock out. He was not wrong. I’m not a huge Leppard fan, but this takes me all the way back to the 80s. Required listening for anyone who still dreams of ripped jeans and long hair.Def Leppard - Songs from the Sparkle Lounge

Studio fun - outtakes

Posted in Personal, Photographers, Photography  by Mike

Whether you’re shooting a model, bride or child, interaction with your subject is a must if you want stunning images. Some photographers expect their victims, sorry, subjects, to do all the work for them. That’s fine if you have a very animated person to shoot, but it’ll only get you so far. Part of the job of a photographer is to also be a director. This needn’t mean pushing your client around and micromanaging each pose, but it should mean having fun, telling stories and putting your subject at ease. I love messing around with my models and brides, and it always produces a fair amount of outtakes which I think are often the best - as they have the *real* laughing smiles! During the winter when wedding season is slow, I spend a lot of time photographing models for both my and their portfolios. It keeps your shooting mind sharp, allows you to practice new techniques and is a great way to polish up your interaction with your subjects. Here are a few outtakes from recent sessions at my studio - full edited highlights of these sessions coming soon…..

From the archives - Alameda Car Show

Posted in Personal, Photography  by Mike

Hunting through my archives this morning looking for a certain image for a killer new project (more soon!!) I found these shots of the Alameda car show a few years ago. Park Street in Alameda was chock full of chrome, fins and more Mustangs and Cameros than you could shake a stick at. I was obviously going through a ‘detail only’ period, since there isn’t a single full shot of a car…only lovely bits of shiny stuff…..

Timberline…still snowy…

Posted in Personal, Photography  by Mike

My family are here from England (more images soon) and we took them up to Timberline Lodge for a hot chocolate over the weekend. Awesome…it was hot (70+ on top of the mountain!), there was still a ton of snow up there. I took a grand total of 10 photographs! The scenery was great, but I was in charge of my boy and had so much fun prancing around in the snow that the camera only came out to take a few quick self portraits with my son…which are here….

Mötley Crüe….oh yeah….

Posted in News, Personal  by Mike

Hot off the presses….Mötley are back, and they are still kicking ass!!

If you are bored with American Idol, manufactured pop, bland, generic music…then the Crüe should have the cüre….
They have a new album due out in June, the first with the original line-up for 10 years. The first song, “Saint’s of Los Angeles” rocks. Big time. They have a huge tour, “Crüe Fest” with 5 bands this summer. The only bummer is that I’ve got a wedding booked for the Portland date!! Some travel may be in order…

The Cult, Live at the Roseland Theater…

Posted in News, Personal, Photography  by Mike

Went to my first gig in Portland last night - The Cult! I’ve seen them a bunch of times in the past, from small clubs in London, to Wembley Arena and the last time was at the Fillmore in San Francisco with my best mate Steve.  The Roseland is, well…small! The security were Nazi like in their attitude (at one point they told people to sit down…..I kid you not. At a rock show…..urgh…) They had scanners and pat searches on the door, so I’m glad I didn’t try to smuggle a camera in.  My phone isn’t the latest and greatest (still waiting for AT+T to offer free incoming calls like Sprint do so that I can switch to an iPhone…that’s another story!) and as you can see from these shots, it’s camera sucks!  Still, a great time had by all there, and Jason and I had many beers (my head tells me too many) and a rockin good time.

Wedding Photography Workflow

Posted in News, Personal  by Mike

Wedding photography workflow.

The digital age was hailed as the freedom that photographers had wanted for years, but in reality it’s chained many of them to their PCs late into the night after a shoot. For some, it’s a necessary evil, get the basics done, archive and move on. For others it’s the start of an artistic journey. My company, Times Two Studios, specialises in helping photographers with their workflow - we take their digital files, color correct, tweak and artistically work them in their own style. Long before my partner Craig and I began to offer these services I’ve had a workflow for my own shooting that suites my style and makes me more productive.

Many photographers these days shoot JPEG - the awesome Adobe Lightroom now offers the same tools to correct JPEGs as it does for RAW, and for some workflows it’s the fastest and easiest way to work. I shoot RAW for many reasons, none of which are ‘to save my ass’. While RAW does contain many more times the amount of data than a JPEG file and duff exposures can be brought back in, that’s not an excuse for poor shooting. The number 1 reason a wedding photographer should be shooting RAW is white balance. During a fast moving event like a wedding with changable lighting conditions, it’s impossible to set a custom white balance that will stick for more than a few shots. You may have window light mixed with tungsten mixed with flash - your custom balance will get it wrong on several. So, shoot auto then right? Nope. Again, each image will have a different white value. When you shoot JPEG, that white value is written into the file. For ever. And ever. It becomes virtually impossible to get a set of images to match. If you shoot auto white balance and RAW however, that white value isn’t embedded into the file and you have a much better chance of getting a series of images to match.

So - for my workflow, I need to have the tools available to edit, process and file RAW images.

My workflow begins before the shoot, by syncing the clocks on any cameras that may get used - this ensures that the shoot will be in order when imported into software later on.

When I get home from a shoot the first order of business is to download the cards to my hard drive. I use a firewire reader over a USB one for speed. All the images go into one folder. I am very fastidious about backing up everything, so before I do any edits at all, I open Adobe Bridge, rename the whole shoot with the date and a reference name - for example: 030708-Mike_001.CR2 - and then back them up to an external hard drive. They are then burnt to 2 sets of DVDs. This step is still part of my process, but in the next year I’m going to phasing that out, and instead moving to having multiple hard drives for back up. DVDs are just not reliable long term, slow to archive and retrieve, and actually more expensive that HDs. Hard drives aren’t 100% reliable, but they are much faster to back up to…time is money!

Once the back ups are done, I sort through my first edit. In the past, I’ve used pretty much every piece of software, but have recently moved over to Photo Mechanic - and it rocks. Nothing on the market can display RAW files as quick. You can bash through a shoot and make your selects in a few hours.

These are then moved to a selects folder and renamed again, in sequence.

Next step is to import the selects into Adobe Lightroom. I’ve tested Aperture from Apple, but it lacks some key features and a bit of speed from Lightroom. When importing I create full size previews - which helps speed later on.

My first step in Lightroom is to quickly run through the shoot and pick out my favorites - these ones will get special treatment in Photoshop later.

The shoot is then processed using my own presets and style - this different for everyone, and the photographers that use our services at Times Two Studios all have their own presets that we created for them. The images are balanced for exposure, contrast and white balance. Any images that I set aside for custom work are then looked at to see if there are any presets in Lightroom that might work, and then the whole lot are exported as full resolution JPEGs with sRGB profile embedded. For the majority of the images, that’s it. For the special ones, they are then taken into Photoshop for any artisic edits.

Once all images have been finished, I then make any online galleries or slideshows needed for the shoot, and then back up the finals to DVDs and external hard drives.

The above workflow is the basis of not only my personal one, but the workflow that we use at Times Two Studios. It will evolve as software changes and as our needs do, but we’ve found it’s the fastest and easiest way to manage large shoots.

Blog updating

Posted in News, Personal  by Mike

I’ve been a very bad blogger. I love blogs - I read, on average, 15 blogs a day, mostly from other photographers. Many of them are far more prolific in their blog writing than I’ve been. One even went a whole year posting every single day! Now, that’s a bit much, and he admitted that at times we was searching for content.
Still, there is no excuse for not keeping this place more up to date, and I plan to be a better blogger from now on!
With that in mind, I’m going to be adding some different content here from time to time - not only photographic work that I’m currently working on, but tips and advice for other photographers, workflow help and some post-processing information too.

To kick things off, tomorrow I’ll post a bit about my workflow for weddings.

Mt Hood Trip

Posted in News, Personal, Photography  by Mike

Mt Hood is only an hour or so away, so we finally took Henry up to the snow for some much needed rest and relaxation! Tagging along were our friends Anna (all the way from the UK) and Jennifer and Jason. No skiing for Alison and I, but we did take Henry out on his first run in a sledge!

Our home for the weekend was an amazing cabin with a hot tub. Not much photography going on - too much soaking and relaxing…here’s a few:

Pearl District Stroll

Posted in News, Personal, Photography  by Mike

The studio is getting very busy lately, and I don’t get the chance to shoot just for myself much - so this past weekend I bundled Henry up in the stroller, and took an hour or two to wander around the Pearl District with my camera. The buildings are awesome there, and we had a great time!

Pals 2008

Posted in News, Personal, Photography  by Mike

I’ve been very very slow at updating the blog - just been way too busy!

One of the reasons is the recenet PALS project. Over the course of 2 days I photographed 46 amazing kids with their favorite toy. The images are still being worked on and will be on display at POSH and Sip and Kranz in the Pearl district from about the 1st Feb. They will also be in a gallery here at Baby Feet….here’s a teaser!!

Pals Project 2008

Posted in News, Personal, Photography  by Mike

The PALS Project: A Collaborative Art Project sponsored by POSH BABY and Baby Feet Foto

poshad.jpg

Posh Boutique will be beginning what hopes to become a tradition: each year, we will invite Portland’s children to be photographed with their most cherished possession, be it a toy, favorite book or a blanket full of holes. Early January 2008, I will be at POSH Boutique to capture the sweet yet serious attachment children have to their security objects.

This Project will be featured in a month-long exhibit at both POSH Boutique and Sip & Kranz, during which prints will be available for order. Participating children should be at least one year old. Spaces are limited to 40 children. This project will also launch the nationwide search for the next face of POSH BABY, which will start here in Portland and continue through February 2008.

Please call (503.478.7674) or visit POSH Boutique at its new location (809 NW 11th Avenue) to make appointments. You may also visit POSH’s online store (www.poshbaby.com) for additional details.
